The Rundown: In order to help Pops, Speed takes to the track and paints a target on his back.

After Pops is attacked in his garage, Speed and Spritle sit with him in the hospital. After learning about how much his care is going to cost, Speed decides to enter the Mach 5 into a sanctioned race to win the prize money. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a sponsor and the man responsible for his brother’s death is all too happy to offer him a shot.

Unable to find a sponsor to enter the race, Speed turns to Trixie after discovering who she is and she decides to give him a shot. Speed enters the race and has to learn quickly what kind of driver he is and what kind of driver he wants to be. At the same time, there is a former driver in the shadows watching and planning to stop him from ever racing again.

The Story: Pepose continues to capture the heart, fun and determination of Speed Racer in this follow up issue. I love the progression of this story and how it brings together all of the elements that I love about the character and his world. The story has a more serious tone to it and it works especially in the moments Speed has doubt. I love that the story shows his team working together and the finale of the issue makes me excited to see more.

The Art: Tinto delivers stylish, intense and beautifully detailed art throughout the issue. I love the visuals and how they generate a sense of movement, speed and momentum.
